This unique port, Quinta do Pégo's second 10-year-old Tawny, is made from 100 % grapes from the exceptional 2009 harvest, which was actually approved as a vintage port. A small part, however, was patiently stored in 600-litre oak barrels for a decade. The port is produced by Rozès' winemaker Manuel Henrique with the assistance of the South African Wouter Pienaar. The grapes for the port wine (Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca, Tinta Roriz, Tinto Cão and Tinta Barroca) come from the old vines that grew on the fields of Quinta do Pégo when the current owner Karsten Søndergaard took over the winery.
This unique Tawny reflects the 2009 harvest year in the Douro. So, unlike with other Tawnies, this is neither a blend of different vintages nor a blend with Tawny character. This unique Port is the pure »Tawny expression« of 2009 in the Douro region, when Mother Nature was particularly generous to the wines. As some things get better with time, this Port, which was initially a wine of great concentration, structure and finesse, was kept in a quiet and dark cellar to slowly transform into this rare and precious Tawny Port. This transformation is due to the knowledge, experience and guidance of the winemakers, who were patient enough to allow the wine to mature through oxidative ageing to this deep and complex harmony of fragrance and elegance.
Take the time to admire the brown and orange hues of this special port and indulge in its finesse, concentration and balance - the three key elements to this unique style of port. The fruit creeps across the tongue with a concentrated and complex palate, while acidity, sweetness and structure balance this exceptional port beautifully.
This port should be served chilled. It is particularly suitable as a »dessert« and with cheese, chocolates and sweets, but also as a cosy wine for the cold and dark season.
