With its stylish look and high-quality workmanship, the »Clark« penny loafer impresses at first glance. According to history, the term »loafer« comes from Norwegian farmers who, more than a hundred years ago, wore shoes to slip into when tending to their cows that were »loafing« in the pasture. »Loafing« was coined for the name of the shoe, which is a perfect fit mainly because of its comfort. The loafer developed from the moccasin, is however clearly distinguished from the shoe of the North American natives by its firm outsole and heel. The »penny loafer« is probably the best-known version of the loafer and was first produced in America in 1910. In 1930, a clever shoemaker from the »Bass« company introduced the shoe as an integral part of school uniforms at elite American universities. The shoe enjoyed very high popularity among the student athletes of the »Ivy League« – a league of the oldest eight universities in the USA. The students also gave the »penny loafer« its characteristic name – before exams, they would put a penny in the slot of the strap on the instep of the shoe for good luck.
