The GunDog Affair »Fife« Men's Derby

Description

The »Fife« men’s full brogue Derby blends British understatement with timeless elegance. Crafted of finest calf leather, it impresses with its natural finish and intricate broguing, giving it a distinctive yet refined appearance. The full brogue is characterised by its distinctive wingtip, which extends along the sides of the upper. A centrally placed medallion on the toe and the extensive broguing along the seams highlight the craftsmanship behind this elegant model. The generously cut Derby lacing ensures excellent comfort and an optimal fit.

A shoe with history

The Derby shoe dates back to the 19th century, when it was originally designed for outdoor pursuits such as hunting. The open lacing gave the shoe practical functionality, while the distinctive perforation – known as broguing – has its origins in the Scottish and Irish Highlands. Originally, the punched holes served to let water escape quickly from the shoes when crossing wet terrain, helping them dry faster.

The practice of punching holes in leather footwear to drain water can be traced back to the shepherds of Scotland and Ireland, who wore such shoes across marshy ground. Over time, this utilitarian detail evolved into a stylistic element that gives the shoe its distinctive appearance. The brogue became firmly established in the 18th century as part of the rural working dress across Britain. Even today, ghillie brogues or simply ghillies – named after the Scottish gamekeepers – remain a modern variant of this traditional shoe style.

Craftsmanship for the highest standards

The »Fife« men’s Derby is crafted using traditional techniques and Goodyear welted with the proven Blake Rapid double-stitch method. This meticulous construction ensures exceptional durability, as the outer sole can be replaced with ease – a shoe designed to last a lifetime. The soft leather lining and padded insole ensure added wearing comfort.

The grippy Vibram rubber tread sole features specially shaped lugs that provide excellent traction on wet surfaces.
Its self-cleaning lug pattern allows dirt and moisture to shed easily, helping the sole maintain its slip resistance.
Especially in wet conditions, it offers outstanding grip while also protecting against cold and damp.
Despite its 8 mm thickness, the sole retains a sleek profile at the sides, comparable to that of a classic leather sole.
