The GunDog Affair »Somerset« Ladies' Tweed Breeks

Description

The »Somerset« ladies' tweed breeks blend traditional British hunting attire with modern elegance. Crafted from authentic Scottish tweed and expertly tailored in one of the last traditional workshops in England, they reflect exceptional craftsmanship and first-class material quality.

Material & craftsmanship

The fine pure wool tweed stands out with its warm gold-olive hue, delicately accented by a sky blue overcheck – a colour combination that is particularly rare and steeped in tradition. The fabric originates from the renowned Lovat Mill in Hawick, Scotland, where outstanding quality tweeds have been woven since the 17th century. The blend of combed Merino wool and finely spun Cheviot wool creates a lightweight yet durable tweed that offers reliable protection from damp and cold.

Symbolism & colour Palette

The subtle blue overcheck is more than just a design feature: In heraldry and hunting tradition, pale blue was regarded as the colour of falconers – esteemed hunters who worked with birds of prey. As a symbol of precision, foresight, and composure, the hue underscored the elevated status of this craft. With the »Somerset« tweed, that symbolism is carried into the present in a discreet, modern interpretation – understated yet immediately striking.

Function & details

Lined with robust viscose serge, the trousers offer excellent comfort and freedom of movement. Two slant pockets and buttoned back pockets provide ample space for securely stowing essentials. The adjustable hook-and-loop fastening at the knee ensures a custom fit and keeps the breeks firmly in place. High-quality materials ensure warmth and protection whether stalking, walking, or waiting in the stand.

Heritage & tradition

Tweed was originally developed as a hard-wearing fabric for Scottish crofters. In the 19th century, it was adopted by the British aristocracy and elevated to the status of Estate Tweed. Queen Victoria, Prince Albert, and their successors helped establish tweed as a key element of refined outdoor dress.

The history of breeks dates back to the Middle Ages, when trousers were worn that ended below the knee and featured a loose cut in the upper section. Over time, they evolved into more fitted garments around the thigh and became closely associated with rural sporting activities.

Their popularity in the hunting world was solidified in the 20th century, when breeks became an essential part of formal hunting attire—and remain so to this day. In modern field sports, breeks are not only a symbol of tradition and style but also offer practical advantages. Their cut allows for freedom of movement, while the robust material offers protection against rough terrain and adverse weather. Whether on a driven hunt or in the hide, breeks combine functionality with a touch of British elegance.

Collection & styling

The »Somerset« tweed pairs perfectly with other garments from the same series, creating a harmonious and stylish ensemble.
