The world of fine spirits - a journey through history, tradition and Pantry & Deli
Spirits are one of the oldest and most important stimulants in the history of mankind. The art of distillation, once cultivated in monasteries and pharmacies, has developed over the centuries into an independent craft that fascinates connoisseurs worldwide. Today, fine distillates are presented in a fascinating variety and always tell of their origins. An overview of the most important classics:
Gin - from remedy to cult spirit
Gin has its origins in the 17th century in the Netherlands, where the doctor Franziscus Sylvius developed the juniper distillate genever. The aromatic spirit quickly became a popular drink and found its way to England via British sailors and soldiers. During the so-called "gin craze" around 1750, London experienced a real boom - not always of the best quality.
Today, gin is one of the most creative spirits thanks to its versatility and the possibility of integrating a wide variety of botanicals. Despite modern variations, juniper remains the central element. Whether classically tangy or exotically fruity: gin is enjoyed neat, as a gin and tonic or in elegant cocktails such as the Martini Dry and Gin Fizz.
Sloe gin, a fine sloe liqueur based on gin with a reddish colour and full fruity character, is particularly popular with hunters.
Cognac - The French classic with a history
Cognac originated in France in the Middle Ages, when people began distilling wine to preserve it. It was soon discovered that ageing in oak barrels gave the distillate additional finesse. Martell, one of the first Cognac Manufacturers, was founded in 1715. The term Cognac has been legally protected since 1909 and only brandies from the Charente region are allowed to be labelled as such.
A high-quality cognac is characterised by a high proportion of Trebbiano grapes. The fine, complex flavours and elegant balance make it a stylish digestif and a popular ingredient in classic cocktails. Pantry & Deli in moderation is also said to have positive properties for the cardiovascular system.
Whisky - character, craft and tradition
Whisky has been one of the finest and most characterful spirits in the world for centuries. Its roots go back to the 17th century in Scotland, Ireland and later to North America. Today, whisky stands for artisan distillation, flavours full of character and origins steeped in tradition. Single malt whiskies, Irish whiskies and bourbon whiskies are particularly popular and differ significantly from one another in terms of their production, the types of grain used and, above all, their flavour.
The most important types of whisky at a glance:
- Single malt whisky: The classic among whiskies, distilled exclusively from malted barley and water, comes from a single distillery and matures for at least three years in oak casks. It stands for pure, unadulterated whisky enjoyment.
- Irish whiskey: With its characteristic "e" in its name, it is traditionally produced from a blend of different types of grain and is usually triple-distilled. The result: a particularly mild and balanced flavour.
- Bourbon whiskey: Native to the USA, it consists of at least 51% corn and is matured in new, burnt oak barrels. Its sweet and spicy flavour makes it popular worldwide.
- Rye whiskey: Also of American origin, it is distilled from at least 51% rye. With its powerful spiciness and distinctive note, it is a favourite for lovers of characterful whiskies.
- Japanese whisky: Inspired by Scottish examples, Japanese whisky has made a name for itself internationally with its balanced, often elegant style.
Each region of origin gives the whisky its own flavour - from soft and fruity to smoky and intense.
Rum - Caribbean joie de vivre in a glass
Rum is inextricably linked to the history of the Caribbean. From the 17th century onwards, the flavoured distillate was distilled from molasses, a by-product of sugar production. Rum was particularly popular among sailors and in the Royal Navy for centuries. Today, fine rums delight with notes of vanilla, caramel, spices and dried fruit - a Pantry & Deli that brings the warmth of the tropics into the glass.
Fruit brandy - the pure power of sun-ripened fruit
Fruit brandies can look back on over a thousand years of history in Europe. Originally distilled by farmers, a traditional craft has developed over the centuries. Today, the fruit regions of Germany, Switzerland and South Tyrol produce fine distillates from apples, pears, cherries, plums, quinces and berries.
A genuine fruit brandy is produced exclusively from the fruit that gives it its name, without additives or artificial flavourings. A digestif with a clear origin and unadulterated flavour.
Vodka - Clear purity from rye and wheat
The roots of vodka go back to the 14th century - both Poland and Russia lay claim to its invention. Produced from rye, wheat or potatoes, vodka is prized for its purity and neutrality. With an alcohol content of usually 40% by volume, it is suitable both neat and as an indispensable base for numerous classic cocktails.
