Description

The term »pea coat« comes from the Dutch word »pijjekker« and describes a coarse type of wool that was used for sailors' jackets. The English later changed the word to »pea coat«. But not only the English and Dutch used this form of jacket for seafaring, the French, Germans and other nations also appreciated it. In Germany, the jacket is also known as a »Caban« or »Colani«. The term »caban« comes from the French and translates as mackintosh or jacket. »Colani« refers to the German tailor's shop »Berger & Colani« from Kiel, which was commissioned to produce seaworthy woollen coats for the German Imperial Navy. In the early days, the jackets were made waterproof and seaworthy by the wearer with the help of a primer consisting of tar, tallow and turpentine oil. The jacket was the traditional sailor's costume in Napoleon's time. It received its special shape in the course of the 18th century: a short and figure-hugging cut for increased freedom of movement during daily work, wide lapels and a large collar for protection against wind and weather, two vertical front pockets with slit access and a double-breasted button placket of six to eight buttons. The double row closure allowed sailors to close the coat in either direction, depending on the wind direction. Still in style today are buttons with an anchor and intertwined rope – a tribute to the people who performed their daily work at sea.

The »Churchill« jacket is still traditionally made in England from 100 % Melton wool and skilfully combines functionality and simple elegance. The wool comes from the small English town of Melton Mowbray, and the dense and heavily fulled wool fabric keeps the wearer very warm while being highly wind- and water-repellent. Not only does the shape of the jacket have a centuries-old history, the wool used also has a long tradition, first being mentioned by name in 1823, and even then it was considered the ideal fabric for functional jackets and coats.
