The vinification: Winemaker Nicki Pruss wisely and carefully selects the best grapes from the various Napa Valley vineyards and skilfully combines them with grapes from her own Fay vineyard in the Stag's Leap District to create this unique Cabernet Sauvignon blend. It has the depth, structure and elegance of the winery's limited single-vineyard wines and is at the same time shaped by the individual character of each Napa Valley vineyard, which enriches Artemis with so many, often minute facets.
The grapes are fermented separately, and the wines are then blended to create the Artemis Final Blend. The Stag’s Leap Artemis Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon is aged for 18 months in French oak barriques (55 % new), after which it is bottled and aged for a further six months. Only then is it released for trade.
Tasting notes: Artemis, the Greek goddess of the hunt, lent her name to the Stag’s Leap Artemis Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon. The quintessence of selected grapes, sites and plots in Napa Valley make it a truly exceptional wine. It shows a deep dark, dense plum red colour with an almost black core and ruby reflections in the glass. The nose is initially surrounded by lush fruity notes. The classic Cabernet bouquet shows characteristic dark fruity aromas of juicy ripe blackcurrants, blackberries and black cherries, fused with creamy caramel, vanilla, mocha, leather, cedar, rosemary, liquorice, underpinned with slightly earthy notes of moss and forest floor. The palate shows the characteristic »iron fist in a velvet glove« with powerful backbone, structure and depth, all gently and creamily wrapped in an enticing composition of deep, ripe fruit, with the classic elegance of Stag's Leap. The wine body has a tight structure with fine-grained tannins and despite all the power, the wine always remains fresh. Everything leads into an incredibly long finish and a beautiful mineral touch rounds off this unique wine experience.
Food pairings: Ideal with flash-fried dark meat such as beef, game and lamb, roast turkey, but also with grilled swordfish with sesame crust or creamy risotto with white truffle. This superb Cabernet Sauvignon from Stag's Leap Wine Cellars should be served at between 16 and 18 °C. To support the complexity of the wine and its richness of facets, decanting is recommended.

    Further details on the manufacturer

The name »Stag's Leap« goes back to a legend passed on by the people of the Wappo tribe formerly living in Napa Valley. From a rocky hill in the valley, a stag is said to have escaped its hunters by a courageous leap to freedom. A good 10 million years ago, the soils were formed by volcanic activity in the Vaca Mountain Range, which borders the Napa Valley to the east. To the west, a hill runs through the middle of the valley, so that the Stag's Leap District practically forms a valley within a valley, with special lava soil and its own climatic conditions. The summers are warm, the winters mild and it rains only rarely throughout the year. Due to the warm temperatures, the grapes reach perfect ripeness. Due to the influence of the nearby Pacific Ocean, fog often forms in the morning, optimally allowing the grapes to retain their freshness and elegance. The special terroir of the Napa Valley with its more than 100 different soils with a high volcanic content and the special climate give the wines their unique flavours typical of the region. In 1970, the winery was founded by Warren Winiarski and his wife Barbara in the Napa Valley and after only a short time it attracted keen attention with its participation in the »Judgment of Paris« on 24 May 1976 in Paris. In complete contrast to what was expected, the Californians emerged as the winners in both categories in the blind tasting of ten top-class French and Californian white and red wines: Chateau Montelena 1973 (white), Stag’s Leap Wine Cellars 1973 S.L.V. Cabernet Sauvignon (red). The decision of the predominantly French jurors gave Californian wines a massive boost worldwide and made Stag's Leap Wine Cellars immortal. In 1986, Winiarski bought the neighbouring Fay Vineyard, which today, together with the original S.L.V. vineyard, forms the heart of the winery. The winery itself characterises the unmistakable style of its wines as »an iron fist in velvet gloves« - powerful wines with a backbone, clear structure, high potential, gently enveloped in juicy fruit, smoothness and consummate elegance.
