The vinification: The »Gravel & Loam« Sauvignon Blanc is an outstandingly balanced single varietal wine, rooted in the deep, gravelly soils of the Onamalutu area in the Wairau Valley. This expansive river valley stretches along the Wairau River, from the Spenser Mountains in the west to the fog-enshrouded Cloudy Bay at the Pacific. Nestled between the Richmond Mountains in the north and the Wither Hills in the south, the valley enjoys protection from extreme weather conditions and, together with the Southern Valleys and the Awatere Valley, forms the heart of New Zealand's Marlborough wine region. The name »Gravel and Loam« reflects the unique terroir, whose gravelly soils store the sun's heat and release it again at night, extending the ripening period of the grapes and leading to more intense flavours. The valley's warm, dry climate, moderated by sea breezes, encourages an optimal balance between fruit complexity and acidity. The careful individual treatment of each plot guarantees the preservation of the characteristic features of each site. After harvesting, the grapes are immediately brought to the winery, carefully sorted, gently pressed, and fermented under controlled conditions in stainless steel tanks, followed by a maturation period on the fine lees, which gives the wine its finesse.
Tasting notes: In the glass, this Sauvignon Blanc shines in a bright light yellow with green hues, on the nose it reveals an explosive aroma of mango, passion fruit, and ripe gooseberry. On the palate, it impresses with a lively freshness and an acidity reminiscent of limes, giving it a dynamic intensity. The flavour composition is both complex and accessible, with a juicy, vibrant minerality, and robust character, crowned by a great freshness and a delicate hint of sea air.
Food pairings: The Sauvignon Blanc not only excels in its solo performance as a true delight but also proves to be a versatile partner for various culinary creations. Its lively, fruity notes pair wonderfully with fish, sushi, grilled tuna, Asian dishes, and pasta. Its affinity for goat's cheese is particularly noteworthy: the wine's fresh fruit flavours and lively acidity complement the creamy texture of the cheese exquisitely, resulting in a balanced taste experience. We recommend drinking the wine at a slightly chilled temperature of between 8-10 °C.

    Further details on the manufacturer

The »Gravel & Loam« winery, located in the breathtaking setting of the Marlborough Sounds in New Zealand, was founded in 2008 by Andrew Bailey. Bailey, a true eccentric with a deep passion for wine and a soft spot for enjoying life, first entered the world of wine through an unexpected twist in his cricket career that took him to the Netherlands. Planned as a three-month stay, his time there was significantly extended after meeting the love of his life. Through his teammate Jarrod Englefield, he first came into contact with the fascinating world of wine. This encounter sparked a passion in him that eventually led him to return to his native New Zealand with the firm intention of dedicating himself to viticulture. Although he began studying oenology, he did not complete it, but developed his expertise directly in the vineyard. What once began with a modest production of 30 000 bottles has developed into a flourishing family business. Nestled in the premier regions of Marlborough and Otago, Bailey's vineyards not only reap the rewards of organic farming certified to EU standards, but also reflect the dedication and affection Bailey and his crew invest in their craft. Andrew Bailey's wines stand out for their genuine simplicity and aromatic integrity, making them an ideal selection for cherished gatherings with friends. The assortment spans the entire array of classic »New World wines« — from Sauvignon Blanc, Syrah, Pinot Noir, and Chardonnay to Riesling and a refined rosé, each bottle a celebration of life's sheer pleasure.
