The vinification: This red wine is a quintessential example of the Blaufränkisch variety, brimming with the spicy and fruity notes characteristic of this grape. The grapes, grown in Austria's Central Burgenland, are also known as »Blauer Limberger«, and result from a natural cross between the Blaue Zimmettraube and the Weiße Heunisch, as evidenced by DNA analyses. The vines thrive on parabrown earths with a chalky sublayer, bolstered by the sheltered position between the Bucklige Welt, the Ödenburg Mountains, and the Güns Mountains. With over 300 sunny days per year and low rainfall, the grapes develop an intense aromatic profile. Harvesting is done by hand in the early morning hours to protect the fruit from the heat. Following selection, the grapes undergo natural mash fermentation and mature in large wooden barrels.
Tasting notes: In the glass, a deep ruby garnet with an opaque core and violet reflections appears, accompanied by a delicate lightening at the edge. The nose is indulged with rich black cherry and dark berries, complemented by hints of cinnamon, mocha, chocolate, and a touch of liquorice - an aromatic bouquet that arouses curiosity. On the palate, fruity and subtle spicy notes prevail, shaped by the distinct tannin structure from the large wooden barrel. A lingering finish enhances the enjoyment.
Food pairings: This wine is a versatile companion, excellently suited to a wide range of dishes: from pizza and pasta to robust, spicy vegetable dishes, grilled and roasted meats, to dark meat and mushroom-based dishes, such as spicy stuffed Portobello mushrooms. To allow its flavour profile to fully unfold, we recommend serving at a temperature of 16-18 °C.

    Further details on the manufacturer

The Strehn winery from Deutschkreutz in Mittelburgenland (Austria) is known for pure, straightforward and individual wines. Pia, Patrick and Andy Strehn have set standards with their imaginative rosé creations, and not only in Austria. They are already the fourth generation to cultivate around 45 hectares of vineyards with vines up to 60 years old. Pia Strehn took the lead in progressively switching the production of the classic red wine estate over to rosé wines. Today, 80 percent of the grapes harvested are made into rosé wine. In the beginning, the vision was to create an alternative to rosé wines with mediocre popularity ratings. The role model was French rosé icons that had long since reached the pinnacle in the world of wine. Pia Strehn decided to turn their local Blaufränkisch into rosé and then also to age it in barrels. The different wines stand out not only for their colour and taste, but also for the original names and labels by Nikolaus Eberstaller, which were awarded the Red Dot Design Award. Today, the range comprises six different wines, from the light »Prickler« to the statement rosé »Elefant im Porzellanladen«, which is matured in wooden barrels. The basis for the wines is always the organically and sustainably farmed red wines from Deutschkreutz with a focus on Blaufränkisch. The »Elefant im Porzellanladen« is today considered one of the best wines of its kind.
