The vinification: Merlot is considered one of the most popular red wine grape varieties in the world. The name »Merlot« first appeared in the 18th century in the French Libournais and was already considered one of the most important grape varieties in the Bordeaux region. However, its origins date back to the 14th century, when this grape variety was still known as »Crabatut Noir«. The grape is a cross between »Cabernet Franc« and »Magdeleine Noire des Charentes«. According to history, it supposedly owes its name to the French word »merle«, which means »blackbird«, either because of the blueish colour of the bird’s plumage or because of their fondness for the delicious grapes.
The grapes for this wine were carefully harvested by hand in the cool morning hours. This procedure serves to protect them from the intense heat of the day. Only the best Merlot grapes of the South African Western Cape have been gracefully combined here in a opulent red wine. After a cold maceration lasting two to three days, the mash is fermented for about a fortnight. After malolactic fermentation, the wine matures for another 12 to 24 months in French oak barrels.

Tasting notes:
Majestic and proud, like an elephant, the wine impresses with a dark purple, red colour in the glass. The nose initially reveals a great fruitiness, which is strongly characterised by fresh red berries and cherry aromas, with a subtle note of aromatic herbs. On the palate, aromas of ripe plums and a nuance of aromatic wild strawberries join in. This elegant red wine delights with a great balance of ripe tannins, well-integrated acidity and good ageing potential.
Food pairings: Delicious with braised dishes, grilled poultry, a hearty T-bone steak, lasagne or even an aromatically matured cheese - the full-bodied Merlot is always the right choice. We recommend drinking the wine at a temperature of between 16-18 °C.

    Further details on the manufacturer

Stellenview Premium Wines is picturesquely situated on the northernmost hills of the Devon Valley in Stellenbosch. In this area, the South African wine-growing region of Stellenbosch in the Western Cape, South African wines of outstanding quality and elegance have been produced since 1659. Stellenview Premium Wines has taken advantage of the unique microclimatic conditions of the Devon Valley. The warm winds from the Atlantic Ocean provide a warming effect during cooler weather periods, making frost virtually unheard of. On dry summer days, the pleasant winds simultaneously provide a cooling effect that prevents heat build-up in the vineyards. The vineyards are situated at an altitude of up to 270 metres above sea level, making them some of the highest in the whole of Stellenbosch. Although yields are lower at higher altitudes, the vines benefit greatly from the more intense sunlight and the good water-holding capacity of the soil, and develop small berries that delight with their special concentration of flavour and intense aroma. Under the direction of Reino Kruger, Devon Valley produces some of the Cape's best and most highly prized Cabernet Sauvignons, Merlots, Pinotages and Sauvignon Blancs. Their strategy of selecting only the best grapes grown in Stellenbosch has brought Stellenview Premium Wines numerous national and international awards in recent years. The labels of the wines pay homage to South Africa and the country's fascinating wildlife.
